The conventional wisdom regarding the air war in Ukraine is built on a foundation of lazy reporting and institutional cowardice. Analysts look at raw airframe counts, repeat manufacturer brochures like scripture, and conclude that Moscow holds an unassailable advantage in the skies simply because its fleet of fast jets outnumbers what Kyiv has left. It is a surface-level assessment that ignores how modern attrition actually functions.

When you strip away the propaganda and look at the telemetry, the entire premise falls apart. Moscow does not rule the airspace. It leases it at an unsustainable cost, bleeding high-value assets to counter-tactics that cost a fraction of a percent of what those jets are worth.

The Mirage of Numerical Superiority

Look at any mainstream brief on the air campaign and you will find the same tired refrain: Russia possesses hundreds of modern multirole fighters while Ukraine fights with a fraction of that airframe count. This is the definition of looking at the scoreboard while ignoring the game being played.

Quantity is not capability when your doctrine forces you to lob munitions from standoff ranges inside your own borders.

If you are flying a multi-million-dollar fighter-bomber only to pitch up at forty-five degrees and release unguided or semi-guided glide bombs sixty kilometers from the target because you are terrified of air defense systems, you are not exercising air superiority. You are running an expensive postal service.

Air superiority means freedom of movement. It means reconnaissance assets loiter at medium altitude, strike packages penetrate deep into contested territory with impunity, and close air support acts as airborne artillery for ground forces. None of this is happening for the invading force. Instead, we see tactical aviation relegated to high-risk, stand-off delivery platforms because operating over the front lines is an effective way to join the rapidly growing statistics of downed hardware.

The Attrition Trap Nobody Wants to Talk About

Let us talk about airframes and pilot hours. Modern combat aircraft are finite resources. You cannot spin up an advanced tactical fighter line overnight, and you certainly cannot manufacture experienced pilots in a six-week crash course.

Moscow's aerospace forces have suffered a catastrophic brain drain. The pilots flying combat sorties today are not the seasoned veterans who cut their teeth in historical regional interventions a decade ago; many of those experienced hands were burned through in the chaotic opening months of the conflict. What remains is a shrinking core of high-flight-hour personnel being pushed past mechanical and human endurance limits.

Every time a sophisticated airborne warning and control asset or an electronic warfare platform is forced out of the sky or damaged on the tarmac, the entire operational network takes a hit. The replacement rate for these specialized force multipliers is practically zero.

When you lose unique nodes in an integrated air defense and command network, your entire fleet becomes exponentially dumber.

The lazy consensus assumes that because a state has a large defense industrial base, it can absorb these losses indefinitely. That is false. You can churn out basic steel hulls all day long, but advanced avionics, thermal imaging sensors, and secure data-link components require supply chains that are currently choking under international restrictions and domestic bottlenecks.

The Electronic Warfare Reality Check

Another favorite talking point of the armchair strategist is the dominance of electronic warfare. Yes, jamming capabilities are dense, and yes, navigation signals near the front lines are heavily degraded. But treating electronic warfare as a static shield is a fundamental misunderstanding of the technology.

Electronic warfare is a dynamic game of cat-and-mouse. Every time a specific frequency band is jammed or spoofed, software-defined countermeasures adapt within days, sometimes hours. The idea that one side holds a permanent monopoly on the electromagnetic spectrum belongs in a Cold War history textbook, not an analysis of a modern technical slugfest.

Furthermore, heavy reliance on massive, area-denial jamming creates a severe operational friction for the side deploying it. When your own communication nodes and navigation aids are blinded by your own high-power emitters, you suffer from self-inflicted command paralysis. It takes a remarkable level of strategic blindness to celebrate a jamming umbrella that fries your own situational awareness just as effectively as it disrupts the enemy.

Rethinking the Metric of Success

We need to stop measuring air dominance by who has the most metal in the air and start measuring it by mission completion rates versus asset preservation.

By that metric, the narrative flips entirely. A defense force that manages to deny deep penetration while operating legacy platforms, interspersed with rapidly integrated Western-supplied systems, is winning the strategic denial battle. They do not need to patrol Moscow's airspace to win the air war; they simply need to ensure that every time an adversary crosses the engagement line, the cost-benefit ratio tilts decisively into negative territory.

When a fighter jet costing fifty million dollars is neutralized by a missile system a fraction of its age and cost, the economic engine driving that military campaign begins to seize up. Wars of attrition are won by math, not press releases. And the math currently favors the side that can preserve its operational integrity while forcing its opponent to trade irreplaceable strategic assets for marginal tactical gains.

Stop looking at the parade grounds. Look at the balance sheets. The supposed master of the skies is burning through its future to buy weeks of past-tense relevance.
