The headlines are predictable. Florida officials are sharpening their knives, aiming at ChatGPT for supposedly "hallucinating" or "providing misinformation" regarding the FSU school shooting. It is a political masterclass in misdirection. They want you to believe that a Large Language Model (LLM) is a sentient agent capable of malice or negligence.

They are wrong.

The investigation isn't about safety. It is about a fundamental misunderstanding of how predictive text works. If you treat a calculator like a historian and it gives you the wrong date, you don't sue the manufacturer. You learn how to use a calculator.

The Fallacy of the Truth Engine

The "lazy consensus" among regulators is that AI should be a verified encyclopedia. This premise is flawed. ChatGPT is not a database. It is a probabilistic map of human language. It predicts the next token in a sequence based on trillions of parameters.

If we hold developers strictly liable for every factual inaccuracy generated by a probabilistic model, the innovation stops. We will end up with "Safety-First" models that refuse to answer 90% of prompts for fear of a lawsuit. We are trading the most powerful cognitive tool in human history for a glorified "I’m sorry, I can’t help with that" machine.

I have seen companies dump millions into "alignment" only to find that the more "aligned" a model becomes, the stupider it gets. You cannot have a high-functioning intelligence that is also a perfectly safe, perfectly accurate, zero-risk entity. It doesn't exist in humans, and it won't exist in silicon.
